The Mexico Public Safety Department (MPSD) with the help of Columbia Police have arrested and charged a man with first degree arson in connection with the Nu-Tone Building fire.
This past Saturday just after 5:30 p.m., MPSD responded to a fire in a building that housed several apartments and a business, located in the 400 block of West Monroe St. The fire resulted in numerous residents being displaced and the death of a dog and two cats.
Investigation led to a case being submitted to the Audrain County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for first degree arson, and an arrest warrant was issued for James H Schade, 42. Schade was a resident of one of the apartments but has been staying in Columbia since the night of the fire. Columbia Police Department arrested Schade without incident today around 4:45 p.m.. During the fire, a GoFundMe page was created for Schade’s benefit. Anyone who donated to the page is asked to contact Mexico Public Safety at (573) 473-5800 or (573) 581-2100.
Residents are reminded that people arrested or charged with a crime are simply accused of the crime and are to be considered innocent until proven guilty.
