Altrusa International of Mexico, Missouri, Inc. met on June 27, at noon at The Oaks for their program meeting. The meeting was called to order by Co-President Nancy Early followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. There were sixteen members in attendance along with four guests.

Committee reports were as follows: Hospitality reported another successful Miss Missouri Luncheon. Foundation elected officers and prepared a budget of $8,800 for Literacy and Community Service with help from a Griffin Foundation grant. Members unanimously approved the final copy of the Club’s budget.

At the latest District Eight Conference, Altrusa of Mexico, Missouri was recognized as a Distinguished Club. This award recognizes a Club’s activity and productivity at every level of program involvement: Service, Programming, Membership, Leadership, Communication and the International Foundation. Based on points system garnered from information submitted annually on the Club Annual Report, the award is a good indicator of all-around soundness.

The program was about Quilts of Valor. Donna Hoffman and Joyce Lowry, two local ladies, work long hours to make quality handmade quilts to gift to service members and veterans touched by war. Several of the recipients are residents at the Missouri Veterans Home here in Mexico. The Quilts of Valor was formed 20 years ago by Cathryn Roberts after her son came home from Iraq. She wanted him to feel compassion and warmth. These quilts must be a specific size, have a label with required information and need to be hand bound. It should not be presented as a gift, it must be a presentation and it has to be recorded on the website. The average cost of the materials and supplies to make a quilt is around $580. They partner with the local Friends & Family Veteran Support Organization to help raise funds for supplies for the quilts. A couple of the fundraisers are the flower and mum sale. They are also going to be selling raffle tickets starting in July for a chance to win a beautiful Christmas Quilt. Both ladies spoke about how moving it was to present the quilts to the veterans at a ceremony. In the month of May, they were able to distribute 24 handmade quilts. Family and friends are invited to attend the ceremony. They showed the club some of the amazing quilts that they have made.

Members gave “Happy Moments” and recited the benediction to close the meeting.
