Centralia bats hungry 2nd day of William Chrisman Tournament, vs Macon

Centralia softball might have lost its first three games of the William Chrisman Tournament but made sure it wasn’t losing another.

The Lady Panthers dropped its season opener Friday in Independence 8-5 to Class 5 Raymore-Peculiar and then its second of the day 13-5 to Oak Grove. On Saturday, Centralia lost 7-6 to Pleasant Hill before defeating host William Chrisman 22-2 and then Harrisonville 15-0. The Lady Panthers continued their offensive hot streak into their Clarence Cannon Conference opener Monday when they defeated Macon 10-1 at home.

The 22 runs against William Chrisman is the most the Lady Panthers (2-3) have scored in a single game since a 22-4 victory Sept. 17, 2020, against Brookfield. They also scored 29 runs that season in a shutout win against St. Michael the Archangel.

Seniors Madison Adkisson and Jozelynn Bostick combined for seven RBI — with Adkisson having four — in a perfect 6-for-6 game at the plate for the duo. Adkisson collected nine RBI in the five games while Bostick had eight during that span.

In the first inning against the host Bears, Centralia scored five runs that were started by a two-run Adkisson double. The Lady Panthers followed with 10 runs in the second inning that saw 15 go to the plate, with Bostick and Adkisson each driving in two runs in the frame.

Freshman Cora King tripled to bring a run in the seven-run third inning prior to Adkisson plating another with a walk.

Junior Kaelyn Walters and senior Meredith Wright combine for three innings with three hits allowed.

Centralia started well against Harrisonville as well, scoring five runs in the first inning that began with a RBI single from senior Harper Sontheimer. She tripled in another run in the seven-run second inning, which saw Bostick and Adkisson come through again in RBI spots.

Walters pitched two hitless and scoreless innings with two strikeouts, and Adkisson added another zero in the circle.

The Lady Panthers were on the other end of a strong start against Raymore-Peculiar as that school’s Panthers scored seven runs in the first two innings. Walters allowed seven runs (five earned) and four hits in three innings.

Bostick, Adkisson and freshman Madi Johnson each contributed RBI in a four-run fifth inning comeback that fell short.

Against Oak Grove, senior Autumn Hawkins and Sontheimer reached base on bunts and each of them scored to give Centralia a 2-0 lead. Walters was relieved by Wright in the fourth inning after allowing two runs on five hits, which jumped to four runs (three earned) after an RBI single was mishandled to allow two more runs to cross.

Four straight hits scored runs for Oak Grove in its eight-run fifth inning.

Centralia scored first against Pleasant Hill, scoring its first three without the benefit of a swing as walks and a bunt got the job done. The Lady Panthers had a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the third inning, which resulted in five runs for Pleasant Hill that was capped by a three-run home run from Brooke Shifflett.

The teams exchanged runs until Katherine Meiries walked it off in the fifth inning for Pleasant Hill.

Walters allowed seven runs (six earned) on five hits and five walks along with four strikeouts.

Adkisson secured her status as Centralia’s RBI leader by driving in four more against Macon, totaling 13 for the season so far. All four crossed in the fourth inning on a grand slam.

Junior Olivia Adams and freshman Madi Johnson each added two RBI, and Walters threw seven innings, scattering eight hits, allowing one unearned run and striking out six.

Centralia responded to a first-inning Macon run with three straight singles in the bottom half of the inning to tie it before taking the 5-1 lead on a Johnson single. The same three batters — Hawkins, Bostick and Sontheimer — reached to begin the fourth inning and set up the grand slam.

Centralia visited  Blair Oaks on Tuesday before hosting Battle on Thursday.
