Traces of the Titanic.

World War I biplanes.

Ulysses S. Grant.

And more - plenty more.

After months of planning and no shortage of pivots, Walk Back in Time returns to Mexico this weekend. And like past incarnations, 2021 promises plenty to do and see.

When asked what she’s particularly pumped about, director of the Audrain County Historical Society Lori Pratt is looking forward to it all, but especially Lewis and Clark.

“It’s something completely different that we’ve never had before,” Pratt said.

Also new this year is the Five Rugged Roads of History. Free to everyone Saturday from 6:30-9 p.m., Walk Back in Time-goers are invited to walk through the Mexico night, taking in these performances: Spirits of the Native Americans, Titanic Tragedy, Civil War Artillery and the Mortician’s Nocturnal Secrets. Performances repeat every 30 minutes between 6 and 8:30 p.m., culminating with Cowboys on the Open Range at 8:30.

Held at the Audrain County Historical Museum Complex at 501 South Muldrow, Mexico, Walk Back in Time kicks off Friday, Sept. 24.  Opening day highlights include Education Day and the Commerce Bank fish fry, which opens at 4:30. Dr. Curt Fields, Ulysses S. Grant, living historian, will present  “The Man Behind the Uniform” at 6:15.

Opening at 10 a.m., the grounds will be bustling with activity Saturday, highlighted by a Wild West Gunfight, the Attic Treasures Sale, Drama of the Orphan Trains, Lewis and Clark Family Artifacts and Stories, General Grant, Mark Twain, viking swordsmen, World War II and Civil War artillery, suffragette equity parade, Notorious Missouri, Tom Bass, and more. The grounds close at 9 p.m. after the Five Rugged Roads of History.

Sunday opens with a gunfight at 10 a.m. and at 10:30, church services will be held by Pastor Brook Kurth. Vintage 1860s base ball, Lewis and Clark, Drama of the Orphan Trains, Harry S. Truman, Col. Grant in Mexico, and the MMA Battalion Review will be some Sunday highlights before the festival closes at 4 p.m.

Music plays an integral role at Walk Back in Time, with this year’s lineup including Liberty Jazz Band, Show-Me Dulcimer Club, Spike and Janis Old time Music, Ellis and Friends Bluegrass and Joe and Joannie American Folk Songs.

So does food. The homemade bake booth offers an array of treats, fresh coffee and the much-anticipated Walk Back in Time apple butter.

“The Boy Scouts make a mean ribeye sandwich,” says Pratt. “And the fish fry is always great.”

The Kemps homemade Amish ice cream also promises to be a favorite.

Best of all- the Walk Back in Time is free to the public. Outside, masks aren’t required; inside the museum they are requested to be worn. Golf carts will be available to shuttle folks to the festival and handicapped residents can call the museum to get a ride. To contact the museum, call 573-581-3910.
