Veterans treated to a pizza party

The Freedom of Road Riders (FORR) Local 13 made a special delivery earlier this month to the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico. FORR used a portion of the proceeds from their May 18 Veteran Cruise and Car Show to give veterans a pizza party.

FORR initially set $300 aside for the home’s activity fund and after hearing that veterans would like a pizza party, they got to work.

“I put it out to our local members,” said Kim Archer, FORR spokesperson, “and we went from just donating the money to them to making phone calls and buying pizzas.”

Support came from the local Dominos.

“Dominos were such good sports and were more than eager to help us out,” Archer said.

With their collaboration, the party was on.

“We took 45 pizzas out there to ensure all staff and residents got some,” said Archer.

While getting everything in order, it was discovered that it Bill and Kay Weldon were to celebrate their 50th anniversary on June 8. Bill is a resident of the home.

“So after a few more phone calls and messages, we upped the money we were going to spend again and bought two cakes, this one for them,” said Archer.

She joked that since they had already “ruined the diet for the veterans we got them a cake also.”

And the party stepped up another level.

But that wasn’t the end.

“Then in the meantime, Chop Gates and his wife Carmen  made a comment that the VA needed bird feed and they donated some money towards it,” said Archer. “We picked up 40 pounds of feed.”

Things just kind of grew - and grew for the better, ending in a day to remember for FORR and the deserving veterans and employees.

“So, in the matter of days from onepost seen on Facebook and several phone calls and messages on Facebook, this went from ‘Here you go, here is some money towards activities, do something they will like,’ to a full-on pizza and 50th anniversary party,” Archer said.

The Freedom of Road Riders Veteran Cruise and Car Show was held May 18 at the West Plaza Shopping Center in Mexico, and was co-sponsored by Carquest Auto Parts. Proceeds benefit the aforementioned VA Activity Fund at the Missouri Veterans Home and the Betty Adams Memorial Toy Run.
