Indians rely on defense for 30-28 comeback win against Louisiana

Fresh off a Palmyra tournament title, the Van-Far boys leaned on what earned that championship on Tuesday.

The Indians fell behind Louisiana 13-1 after one quarter in the first round of the Bowling Green Tournament on Tuesday but outscored the Bulldogs 29-15 the rest of the way for a 30-28 victory. Van-Far (10-7) didn’t allow Louisiana (12-6) to reach double digits in any of the final three quarters.

Nikos Connaway led Van-Far with seven points and 13 rebounds, Cody Smith had seven points, and Gage Gibson finished with six points.

Van-Far lost 60-39 on Thursday to top seed Elsberry (13-5), moving Van-Far (10-8) to today’s third-place game at 3:30 p.m. against Bowling Green (6-8). Connaway finished with 15 points in the loss, and Pacey Reading followed with nine points.

Lady Indians eliminated after 67-44 loss to Clopton

The Bowling Green Tournament brought a special moment for the Van-Far girls, but those tournament moments are over.

The Lady Indians lost 67-44 to Clopton on Wednesday in the consolation bracket to eliminate them from the tournament.

Mara Jensen led all tournament scorers for the second time by scoring 25 points, following Monday’s 23 points that secured her 1,000 career points.

Clopton’s Braya Smith was not too far behind her on the day’s leaderboard with 20 points.

The Lady Indians lost 47-29 on Monday to open the tournament against top seed Elsberry but not before Jensen scored 23 points, including her 1,000th career point.

Van-Far (3-15, 0-5 EMO) faces another Eastern Missouri Conference foe — this time in conference action — at 7 p.m. Monday against Montgomery County (15-4, 5-0 EMO).
