The Mexico girls closed their summer in a positive way.
In a shootout on June 25 at Montgomery County, the Lady Bulldogs won two of their three normal scrimmage games and went undefeated in Montgomery’s two-minute contest tournament to win it. Mexico defeated Warrenton 44-21 and Van-Far 23-20 and lost to Pittsfield 38-36 to close its summer record at 6-4.
Mexico had eight players available to play during the day, and head coach Makenzie Mudd likes how her team approached the challenge.
“Overall, I was very impressed with the effort and outcome of the games today,” Mudd said. “We only had eight players and played a lot of basketball and had to fight through some tough opponents. There are so many positive takeaways from this summer's games and I am very excited for this upcoming season to continue to build on the work that these athletes have been putting in.”
Montgomery holds a two-minute tournament during its shootouts that is double elimination. Teams play two-minute games and advance or try to fight their way back in the losers bracket if they lose one. The Lady Bulldogs won all four of their games.
“We went undefeated and won that tournament, showing a lot of great instinct and grit in end-of-game style situations,” Mudd said.
