The city of Mexico’s council approved a rezoning change that will allow Southside Christian Church to open a K through 5th-grade private school.
The church is located on Lakeview Drive and had three different zoning types that were changed to allow for the school. The plan is for the school to open for the 2023/24 school year in a couple of months.
At a public hearing held before the change on May 22 at the council meeting, Melanie Utterback, a board member for Southside Christian, spoke in favor of the change. Utterback said the city already has a good public school and mentioned St. Brendan’s but also said the church has heard from some of its members a desire for another option.
“We’re just hoping to offer another option for the Mexico area,” Utterback said at the hearing.
