North Callaway stays on smooth trach in 10-0 win over South Callaway
North Callaway didn't have much to worry about in its home softball opener.
The Ladybirds defeated Callaway County rival South Callaway 10-0 in six innings on 13 hits. Lauren Speight pitched all six innings while only allowing three hits and no walks.
Speight kept South Callaway (0-1) from threatening but only had to stress a bit during 13 pitches thrown to one batter.
There was some cause for worry at first for Lia Bondurant after she hit in the helmet in the first-bat. She followed that by going 3-for-3 with one RBI.
Kymorie Myers finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a triple and double, and Megan Schmidt was 3-for-4 with a RBI.
"After we were a little shaky at the plate in the first two innings, we got back on track," head coach Mariah McKee said.
North Callaway (2-2) plays at Van-Far (0-2) at 5 p.m. Thursday for both teams' Eastern Missouri Conference opener.
Centralia's Brown brushes off leadoff single, mows down Blair Oaks for 3-0 win
A leadoff single is all Blair Oaks was going to get against Jaylynn Brown on Tuesday.
The Centralia sophomore retired 21 straight batters and struck out 12 to lead the Lady Panthers to a 3-0 win on the road in Wardsville.
Centralia (5-2) scored in the top of the first inning after Ealynne Bostick grounded out to plate Tilly Fox, who took two bases on errors following her leadoff single. Fox recorded a RBI on another single in the fifth inning to make it 3-0. Fox finished 3-for-4 with RBI.
In the fourth inning, Madi Johnson and Cora King's hot starts to the season continued with King's double bringing home Johnson after her single.
Blair Oaks (2-4) senior Ava Willson had the hard-luck loss by pitching seven innings with eight hits, seven strikeouts, two earned runs and no walks.
Centralia hosts Class 5 Battle (2-3) at 6:45 p.m. Thursday.
Mexico strands tying run in scoring position in 3-2 loss at Marshall
Mexico didn't have much going on offense on Tuesday until the final two innings.
The Lady Bulldogs had their five-game winning streak against North Central Missouri Conference foe Marshall snapped with a 3-2 loss on the road. Mexico finished with four hits, with half of them earned in the final two innings.
Mexico (1-5, 0-1 NCMC) had to play from behind all game after Marshall (3-1, 1-0 NCMC) scored two runs in the first inning. The Lady Owls took advantage of an error after two hits lead off the inning.
Marshall scored again in the second inning to force Kaitlyn Krietemeyer out of the game in favor for Aleigha Henderson, who struck out three and allowed one hit in 4 1/3 shutout innings.
Alyssa Miller hit a sacrifice fly for Mexico in the sixth inning. A runner was left at third base to end that inning and another runner was left at second base to end the seventh. Hannah Loyd smacked a two-out RBI double in the seventh inning.
Mexico plays its home opener at 5 p.m. Wednesday against Bowling Green (0-1).
Paris
Paris won 11-5 at Mark Twain (2-2) on Tuesday to open its season. Junior varsity won 12-7.
The Lady Coyotes play their home opener at 5 p.m. Wednesday against South Shelby (1-2).
Boys soccer
Mexico
Mexico won its season opener on Tuesday on the road, defeating Elsberry with Silex (0-2) 2-1.
Oscar Alvarez scored in the first half, and then Isai Hernandez scored in a rebound goal in the second for a 2-0 Mexico lead. Grant Walker had six saves for Mexico.
The Bulldogs play their home and North Central Missouri Conference opener at 6:30 p.m. Thursday against Fulton (0-1).
Missouri Military Academy
Missouri Military Academy opened the season on Tuesday with a 5-3 win at Warrenton (1-1).
MMA led 4-2 at the half and closed out the victory thanks partially to two goals from Fernando Puebla and one goal from Alvaro Gonzalez. Trey Rudolph had four saves in goal.
The Colonels play at Moberly (2-0) at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Volleyball
Centralia
Centralia lost its season opener on Tuesday at Fulton, who defeated the Lady Panthers for a district championship in Fulton last season. The Lady Panthers won the second set 25-19 but lost the other sets 25-22, 25-17 and a tightly contested fourth set 26-24.
Ryenn Gordon had 20 kills, Caris Finlay had 34 assists and 16 digs, and Addison Mabrey recorded four blocks. Finlay broke the previous school single-match assists record of 31.
Centralia plays at 7 p.m. Thursday at Eldon.
North Callaway
North Callaway won its season and home opener on Tuesday by sweeping district foe New Bloomfield 25-8, 25-17 and 25-6.
Head coach Andrew Klein said he was pleased to play 12 girls in the rotations in the victory.
North Callaway hosts Eastern Missouri Conference rival Montgomery County at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
Girls golf
Mexico
Mexico opened the season on Tuesday with a home meet involving New Bloomfield and Hallsville at Arthur Hills. Ella Connell had Mexico's best score of 57. Hallsville's Avery Pemberton won the meet with a score of 48.
Khloe Bohl had some "impressive" shots and improved, head coach Layne Meyers said, and Cassandra Young had a chip-in shot on one hole for bogey.
"The girls were nervous but had a great first experience.," Meyers said. "Ella Connell and Khloe Bohl are ones to watch as the season progresses. I have high hopes for them to achieve many accolades this season."
Mexico hosts another meet on Thursday involving Harrisburg, Palmyra and Southern Boone.
Centralia
Centralia's Kyla Spickert was the runner-up in the Lady Panthers opening meet on Tuesday in Centralia.
Spickert shot a 50 to only trail Harrisburg's Lindsey Burbridge and her 48. Madie Shelton had the next best Centralia score at 57, Lyla Mattison had a 61, and Emerson Eckler had a 63.
The Lady Panthers scored 231 as a team, which trailed the scores of 215 shot by Harrisburg and South Shelby.
Centralia plays a quad meet at Westran on Thursday involving Cairo, New Franklin and Paris.
Girls tennis
Mexico edges Marshall 5-4 in conference opener
Mexico squeezed past Marshall (0-2, 0-1 NCMC) in its North Central Missouri Conference opener on Tuesday at home, winning 5-4.
The Lady Bulldogs (2-5, 1-0 NCMC) won four singles matches and one doubles match. For singles, Claire Hudson won 8-1, Baylea Porter won 8-6, Yolitza Rodriguez-Rios won 8-5 and Reiley Walker won 8-3. Hudson and Lucy Gleeson were the only doubles pairing that won 8-2.
Hudson was the only Lady Bulldog to win singles and doubles and compiled a 5-1 record over the weekend in the Joplin Interstate Championships to open the season.
Mexico played to a 1-5 record in the 24-team tournament in Joplin, beating Lebanon 3-2 but losing to Rogers (Arkansas) 5-0, Carthage 3-2 and Logan-Rogersville, Grain Valley and Willow Springs each by a score of 4-1. Three of those Missouri schools were a higher class than Mexico, including Class 3 Lebanon.
Mexico hosts Capital City at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
