Easter returns to Presser Arts Center

“It’s been five years.”

It doesn’t seem possible, but that’s the amount of time that has elapsed since Presser Arts delivered its last Easter musical, as assessed by Barb Green.

Historically held on alternating years, 2017’s production came and went and when it was time for the next edition, a not-so-little thing called COVID-19 was settling in.

But it’s back and Barb and Cara Miller are co-directors of Presser’s return to Easter, “For Such a One as This,” set for April 8, 9 and 10 at Presser. Show times are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Rehearsals for what could best be called a “dramatic musical production” began in January and features various monologues. Those monologues are delivered by those who knew Jesus and offer each character’s unique perspective on the unfurling of events we now know as Easter.

Considerable thought was dedicated to selecting a production. As it turns out, there aren’t that many new Easter musicals and the directors were steadfast about wanting to deliver something new.

“We didn’t want to do anything that had been done before,” said Cara. “We wanted it to be fresh.”

Drawn to multiple aspects of “For Such a One as This,” its uniqueness stood out - and so did the music.

“We really liked the music,” said Barb.

Both women are members of First Presbyterian Church and have been involved in community choir in various forms for years. The longtime friends complement each other and they joke that they remain friends even after months of rehearsals.

Visiting in Presser’s hall, Steve Kreyling was working on the set which includes the three crosses of Calvary. It’s deliberately stark to not distract from the performance.

“We want the music and the story to tell the story,” said Barb.

Kreyling also plays Pontius Pilate.

And the directors are confident that story will resonate with attendees.

“It really puts you in that person’s shoes,” said Cara.

“For Such a One as This” is about 90 minutes in duration with no intermissions. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased at presserpac.com or at the box office during business hours. General admission is $12 adult, $6 child; reserved, $20 adult, $10 child. Presser Arts Center is located at 900 S. Jefferson St., Mexico.
