Community R-6 hosts academic awards

While the 2023-24 school year is in the past, and another one on the horizon, there are still awards worthy of recognition for the past school year. The Community R-6 High School held its annual academic awards in May in the school’s gymnasium. Several seniors were recognized and presented with area scholarships.

Three Community R6 seniors were presented with scholarships from the VFW Post 3772. Freddy Cruz with the VFW presented the scholarships to Grace Matich, Zachary Love, and Aaron Carter, which is given in memory of veterans. The scholarships are $2500 each. 

The Community Teachers’ Association presented $250 scholarships to those who received the titles of Trojan King or Trojan Queen during their high school career. Participants for the title must construct a resume and participate in a panel interview process. The winners were: 2022, Aaron Carter and 2024, Clara Stone and Dylan Hoyt.

Jennifer Gilman presented the students who were selected to represent Community R6 at Missouri Boys and Girls State. Amy McCurdy and Clayton Jennings will attend the event later this summer.

The DAR Good Citizen of the Year award is given to a dependable student who believes in service to the community, has leadership skills, and demonstrates his or her patriotism. This year’s winner was Dylan Hoyt.

A sophomore who has high standards, demonstrates courage and is a good citizen is chosen for the sophomore pilgrimage. Matthew Utterback was the winner.

Bob Curtis recognized Braysen Glasgow, Jocelyn Curtis, Kyler Swaim, Olivia Schafer, Clara Stone and Zachary Love for perfect attendance this year. In addition, throughout his entire school career at Community R6, Zachary Love has not missed more than one period of school per year. For this accomplishment, he received a $100 bill.

Melanie Utterback, high school science, presented several awards to students. First, she recognized those who participated in the Envirathon. They were Jocelyn Curtis, Chloe Johnson, Ean Johnson, Amy McCurdy, and Matthew Utterback.  Each year, the freshman physics classes construct their own courses and play a game called Broomball. The annual Golden Broomball awards were given to Brett Beamer and Nick Crider.  The top students in Physics First received awards for having the highest grades. Utterback presented the awards to Hayley Stone and Grace McCoskey.  For biology, the top student awards were given to Lane Carter, Jocelyn Curtis, and Matthew Utterback.

Language Arts awards were next. Haley Larson presented her star awards to her top students who were: LA 1, Hayley Stone and LA3, Kate Robnett. Her developing readers award went to Grace Welch, Ella Duenke, and Callie Jennings. Students who read 30 books this school year were recognized and they were Alexis Swaim and Kate Robnett. Larson’s final award recognized students who have a talent for writing. This year’s Golden Pen awards were given to Hayley Stone and Ean Johnson.

On behalf of Jami Williams, Larson presented the awards for LA 2 and yearbook. Williams gave the “Dark Horse” award to Jonathan Holsman for showcasing his hidden talents. The “Coming in a Clutch” award for students who had everyone’s backs went to Kylie Brooks and Brittney Meyers. The “Lean On Me” award was given to Austin Folkers and Kyler Swaim.

Becky McCurdy recognized several outstanding students in her business classes. Kicking off the subject were recognitions for FBLA. Rhett Curtis, Matthew Utterback, and Amy McCurdy were recognized for performing in the top five at districts and moving onto the state competition. Amy McCurdy was also elected the District 7 VP of membership.  Senior Olivia Schafer received an FBLA Scholarship.

In the business coursework, Dylan Hoyt, Grace Matich, and Amy McCurdy received honors for personal finance. In computer applications, Becky McCurdy recognized Amy McCurdy and Matthew Utterback for having the top grades in the class. Hayley Stone received an award for Intro to Business.

Missy McCoskey proctors classes in the upper math courses. She named several upperclassmen for awards. In the pre-calculus class, Kate Robnett and Rylee Rafferty received the Excellence in Math award. Ean Johnson received the “Great Perseverance” award.  In the Survey of Math class, Aaron Carter received the Excellence in Math award while Grace Matich was named the winner of the “Great Perseverance” award.

Kendra Murphy gave awards in several of her classes. The excellence in math awards were given to Hayley Stone, Algebra I, Matthew Utterback, Algebra II, and Chloe Johnson, Integrated Algebra.

Daniel Wichern also presented mathematics awards. In his pre-algebra class, Cameron DeLozier received the “Putting in the Work” award while Haley Roseall got the Grind award. In Geometry, Lane Carter was the “Putting in the Work” award winner and Austin Folkers was the Grind award winner.

Wicher, who coaches the Scholar Bowl team, also presented letters to members of the team. This year, the team reached the semi-finals at districts. The team members are: Taven Lewis, Andrew Poindexter, James Darling, Matthew Utterback, and Ean Johnson.

Trenton Pummill presented awards in history. He gave Andrew Poindexter, Lane Carter, and Matthew Utterback the History Buff award. Four students were recognized for receiving perfect scores on the US Government exam: Aaron Carter, Ean Johnson, Rylee Rafferty, and Josh Scholfield. Five students also received 100% on the Mo Government Test. They were Aaron Carter, Clayton Jennings, Ean Johnson, Kate Robnett, and Drake Welch.

Mrs. Deimeke presented several awards for art. The Community R6 High School Art Show had completed prior to the awards. Jocelyn Curtis won first place in the “black and white” category and Jordyn Olighschlager won for color. The Best in Show was given to Ava Thew.

Those receiving “artist of the month” honors were: August, Jocelyn Curtis; September, Clara Stone; October, Jordyn Oligschlager; November, Mason Rohan; December, Rylee Rafferty; January, Jordyn Oligschlager; February, Cassidy Boyer; March, Chris Lewis; April, Kate Robnett; and May, Taylor Johnson. Artist of the year honors went to Jocelyn Curtis.

Students were also recognized for winning art awards at districts. Those students were Clara Stone, Ava Thew, Chloe Eckler, and Cassidy Boyer.

The star assistant awards were given to Kylie Brooks, Olivia Schafer, Brooklynn Glasgow, Alyssa Beamer, and Brittney Meyers.
