City of Mexico welcomes Western Smokehouse Partners

Mexico will soon be welcoming a new major employer.

In an announcement made Friday afternoon, the City of Mexico announced that Western Smokehouse Partners, LLC will be expanding its operations by opening a new meat snack manufacturing plant at 4655 E. Liberty Street. This 300,000 square foot site, formerly occupied by Soft Surroundings, will soon become a hub for better-for-you meat snack production.

"We are thrilled to welcome Western Smokehouse Partners to our community," said Mayor Vicki Briggs. "This investment not only highlights the economic potential of Mexico, MO, but also brings significant job opportunities and growth to our area."

Western Smokehouse Partners, under the leadership of CEO Matt Bormann, plans to invest $60 million in building improvements and state-of-the-art equipment for the new facility. This significant investment will create 250 new jobs, enhancing the local economy and supporting the community’s growth. The facility is set to launch operations in August 2025.

Western Smokehouse Partners began in Greentop, and has since expanded its operations to include locations in Galesburg, Ill., Burlington, Iowa, Springfield, Ill., and Shelley, Idaho. The company is renowned for its unwavering commitment to quality and excellence in the meat snack industry, consistently delivering products that meet the highest standards. Their new facility in Mexico, will further solidify their position as a leader in the market. Renovations for the new plant are set to begin in October, with an estimated project completion date next summer.

"This expansion is a testament to the strength and potential of Mexico, Mo., as a location for business growth," added Bruce Slagle, city manager. "We are confident that Western Smokehouse Partners will find a supportive and thriving community here."

Matt Bormann, CEO of Western Smokehouse Partners and a University of Missouri alum residing in Columbia, expressed his enthusiasm for the expansion: 

"We are excited to bring our operations to Mexico, Mo. and contribute to the local economy,” Bormann said. “This expansion is a testament to our dedication to meeting the growing demand for better-for-you meat snacks and our confidence in the workforce and community of Mexico. The city’s strategic location makes it an ideal place for us to grow."

Western Smokehouse Partners, LLC Western Smokehouse Partners, LLC, based in Greentop, is a leading producer of premium meat snacks. With a commitment to quality and innovation, the company continues to expand its operations to meet the growing demand for its products. 

For Bormann, it’s a bit of a homecoming, with his personal roots in the region.

“We’re really excited to be joining this community,” he said during the announcement. “We like to keep good jobs in small towns.”

Starting salaries are anticipated at $18.50 an hour, with an average annual salary of $45,000.
