Brooke Jameson has been CEO of the Mexico Area Family YMCA for just over a week. But she is familiar with the many activities enjoyed by area residents.

After all, Jameson served with the Mexico Parks & Recreation Department for the past four years and played a major role in planning the new Fairgrounds Aquatic Center. Before that, she worked for the state park system. Jameson was born in Center and did undergraduate and graduate studies in natural resources at the University of Missouri.

1. You put a lot of work into the new pool. Is it hard not to be a part of it?

It’s exciting to see it. And it’s more visible in this position. I actually see it more now than if I were at Parks & Rec. Our day camp kids use the pool every day and they always have big smiles.

2. Why are there so many parks in Mexico?

I think the city government and the community value natural resources. They are very supportive.

3. Now you are stuck indoors.

It is definitely a change of scenery. But leisure isn’t always outside.

4. You call it leisure? There’s a gym here.

Well, our facility serves a lot of purposes. We’re home to a summer food program. Any child up to 18 can eat free in the summer. We’re involved in healthy aging. The YMCA is truly a community resource.

5. Do you have big plans for the Y?

I’m really lucky that all the staff are excellent at their jobs. That’s due to the board and the previous director. So my first 100 days, as it were, is really observing.

6.  What’s your favorite program?

We have a Super Six program, a free membership for all sixth graders. We provide a safe home base for them and hopefully we can turn them into lifelong members. Programs like this are possible because of generous gifts from the community.

7. How has the transition from Parks & Rec to the Y been?

The transition has been smooth. My supervisor at the city, Chad Shoemaker, was very supportive. The YMCA is such a value to the community and Chad values it as a community resource. We will continue to work well together. We have the same common purpose. My mom was a teacher. I always tried not to follow in her footsteps, but I keep finding myself in positions that support youth and families.

8. What do you miss most about Parks & Rec?

I certainly got to be outside more. But getting to see community members on a daily basis is worth it. I should add that I miss my Travis Kelce poster. I accidentally left it behind.

9. When you are not involved in community activities, what do you do?

My boyfriend and I have two dogs. We spend a lot of time with them. I’m a big Mizzou and Chiefs fan. We take football season very seriously.

10. Chiefs? Why not America’s team, the Cowboys?

Well, I grew up in a home where it was Chiefs football every Sunday. It was instilled in me at a young age. I’m sure it’s the same with you Cowboys fans.
